Background of the Study
Access to quality healthcare is one of the fundamental human rights, yet rural areas often face significant disparities in healthcare delivery, especially regarding nursing resources. Nurses are crucial to the healthcare system, providing direct patient care, education, and support. In rural healthcare facilities, the availability of nursing resources, such as adequately trained personnel, medical equipment, and essential medications, directly impacts the quality of care patients receive (Oluwaseun et al., 2024). Niger State, located in central Nigeria, comprises several rural communities where healthcare access is limited by geographical, socio-economic, and infrastructural barriers. Rural healthcare facilities often operate under constraints such as inadequate staffing, lack of modern medical technologies, and insufficient training for nurses.
Nurses working in these settings face the challenge of delivering effective care without the necessary resources, which can lead to suboptimal patient outcomes. Research into the availability of nursing resources in rural healthcare facilities in Niger State is essential to understand the extent of these challenges and the potential improvements that could be made to enhance healthcare delivery in these underserved areas. This study aims to assess the availability of nursing resources, identify resource gaps, and propose strategies for improving the working conditions of nurses in rural healthcare facilities.
Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of nursing care in rural healthcare facilities in Niger State is compromised by the lack of essential resources, including trained personnel, medical supplies, and support services. This limitation in resources hinders nurses from providing adequate care, potentially contributing to poor health outcomes in rural communities. Therefore, assessing the availability of nursing resources and identifying the critical gaps in these areas is necessary to inform policy and intervention strategies that can enhance healthcare delivery.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the availability of nursing resources (personnel, medical supplies, training, etc.) in rural healthcare facilities in Niger State.
2. To evaluate the impact of the lack of nursing resources on the quality of healthcare provided in rural areas.
3. To propose strategies for improving the availability and accessibility of nursing resources in rural healthcare settings.
Research Questions
1. What nursing resources are available in rural healthcare facilities in Niger State?
2. How does the lack of nursing resources affect the quality of healthcare delivery in these facilities?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the availability of nursing resources in rural healthcare facilities in Niger State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Rural healthcare facilities in Niger State with a higher number of available nursing resources deliver higher-quality healthcare compared to those with fewer resources.
2. The lack of sufficient nursing resources in rural healthcare facilities leads to suboptimal patient outcomes.
3. Implementing targeted interventions to improve the availability of nursing resources will significantly improve healthcare delivery in rural Niger State.
Definitions of Terms

• Rural Healthcare Facilities: Health centers or hospitals located in rural or remote areas that serve populations with limited access to urban healthcare services.
• Healthcare Delivery: The provision of medical services to patients, which includes prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
